Crews from the Bedford Department of Public Works plan to salt any icy spots on Bedford roads tonight and are scheduled to begin sidewalk clearance and address other spot cleanup sites Wednesday, as February 1 overnight storm fades into memory.

DPW Director David Manugian said the official depth of the snowfall, which spanned about 18 hours Monday and Tuesday, was 17.5 inches.

Pre-storm preparation on the roads began Monday morning, Manugian said, and private contractors joined the DPW Highway Division for clearance and sanding operations beginning at 2 p.m.

Overnight, “The temperature moved around a little bit and the snow consistency definitely changed. That was one of the challenges,” Manugian related. “And the snow last night got pretty intense for a while so they were just trying to keep ahead of it.”

He said the contractors left around 9 a.m. Tuesday and the staff went home around 1 p.m. to rest, with all streets cleared.

School parking lots also have been plowed. Wednesday is the full remote learning day for the four schools, Manugian said, providing a cushion to ensure school bus stops are safe.

He expects it will take two or three days to finish the sidewalks. Mailbox damage issues will be addressed next week.

“We appreciate people’s patience as we finish clearing,” Manugian said. “By the weekend we should be in pretty good shape.”
