I support Catherine Van Praagh as a candidate for the Board of Health. Letters written by others have pointed out her technical qualifications, notably her master’s degree in microbiology and her relevant work experience. I want to call attention to the objectivity and people skills she would bring to the Board of Health.
In the course of this pandemic, the scientific consensus has occasionally shifted as more information about this new virus became available, pointing out the importance of open-mindedness and flexibility. I trust Catherine not just to plot a wise course into the future, but to adjust that course as new developments warrant.
During her term chairing the board that manages First Parish Church, I saw her lead the congregation through difficult decisions concerning policy and personnel. Whatever the topic, she showed a remarkable ability to listen to all voices, even those that could be critical or hostile. She has a knack for recognizing and expressing the consensus of goals and values that often lie beneath differences of opinion.
I believe these talents could serve Bedford well on the Board of Health, so I encourage you to vote for her on March 13.
