Nancy Kerrigan Talks with Bedford Mothers Out Front

February 12, 2021
Nancy Kerrigan (2nd from the right) visited the Mothers Out Front booth on Bedford Day, 2019

Olympic skater and environmental activist Nancy Kerrigan was the featured guest at a recent meeting of Bedford Mothers Out Front.  As well as being an internationally renowned figure skater and a Massachusetts native, Nancy is the spokesperson for Revise, a local home energy assessment MassSave partner.  Revise has been donating $35 to the Town of Bedford to support energy-related projects for every local no-cost energy assessment they conduct.  If you haven’t had one in the last two years, get yours here: https://netzerobedfordma.org.

Both regular Mothers Out Front members and first-time guests attended the virtual event.  Attendees heard year-end highlights of Bedford Mothers Out Front’s efforts through the tough Covid year, including persevering on increasing curbside composting, advocating for hiring a Sustainability Director for Bedford, and learning about transportation issues in town. An informal interview-style talk with Nancy Kerrigan followed.

Nancy talked about her early years in ice skating, how she learned to skate with her brothers, gradually focusing her attention on figure skating as her ability grew and was recognized. Nancy also reflected on how ice skating has helped her be a better parent—giving her the ability to cope with mistakes, to get up after a fall, to persevere, to have empathy.  She shared the importance of accepting that no one has the right answer all the time, and that we can relate to others with grace and interest, even when we disagree with them.  These are life lessons for us all!

Nancy got involved with Revise and longtime Bedford resident Dan Carroll through a mutual friend.  Her association with Revise has enabled her to call attention to the importance of energy efficiency in our homes, both as cost-saving measures and as steps toward reducing the adverse impact of climate change.  As Mothers Out Front knows, energy efficiency is one easy way that everyone can reduce carbon emissions and help protect the future of all children!
