The Bedford Council on Aging ~ A February Message

February, the shortest and 2nd month, following the month of new beginnings, is known as ‘the month of purification’ from the Latin word Februarius meaning, to purify. What a perfect definition of our current situation with COVID, bringing hopes of the vaccine on the horizon to rid us all of this terrible virus, allowing us to be back together and, to bring some kind of normality to all our lives in the near future during 2021.

By now you may have heard about the many COVID testing sites being offered by the Town of Bedford. Residents aged 65 and older are able to call the COA to book an appointment or can register on-line on the Town website www.bedfordma.gov. These testing sites are being offered at no cost and results are provided within 48 hours. If you would like more information on testing please call us at the COA or the Board of Health or see the Town the website.

At the time this newsletter went to print we did not have further information on the COVID vaccine. However, when more news becomes available the Town will provide information through the Bedford Community Notification Service, also known as CodeRed or reverse 911, and on-line. If you would like to sign up to receive these telephone notifications from the Town you can register on the Town website or call (781) 275-1212 x116 and speak with one of the communication specialists. If you have access to a computer please check frequently on the Town website, Town Facebook page or The Bedford Citizen for updates as they become available.

February and March are busy months with tax season at the COA. This year will be a little different for appointments but we are going to offer this important and essential service for those who need it, thanks to our amazing AARP tax volunteers. More information on taxes, how to sign up and what to expect this year is available from the COA.

Please know that we continue to be here for you, as we have since March of last year. We care about every one of you and appreciate all the letters of thanks we have received from you and family members. It means a lot to us to know that our work is as important to you as it is to us.  We know isolation has been magnified during COVID and the winter ahead can be long and lonely. Please do not hesitate to contact us for support at home, rides to appointments and to run errands or, if you need simply a friendly voice to speak to. We are just a phone call away.
