Finance Director Resigns

Marisa Batista has resigned as Bedford’s finance director and town accountant for personal health reasons.

Town Manager Sarah Stanton said on Friday that Batista’s departure is effective on March 19. “We fully respect her privacy in this matter,” Stanton said.

The appointment of Batista, former finance director in Hamilton, was confirmed by the Select Board on Jan. 25.

Toni Mertz will return as interim finance director, Stanton said. Mertz, retired business manager for the Malden schools, was named interim director after Victor Garafalo departed to become Dracut’s finance director on Jan. 8. Mertz had remained in the finance office to help Batista with the transition and was the point person for the department during recent Finance Committee budget deliberations.

This is the second unexpected management vacancy in Town Hall this year. Rachel Kelly, who began working as Bedford’s conservation administrator in October, left at the end of January to become Winthrop’s director of planning and development.
