Health Department Plans to Hire an Additional Youth Social Worker

March 21, 2021
The town Department of Health and Human Services plans to hire a social worker next month whose main role will involve young people transitioning out of the pandemic.

Director Heidi Porter told the Board of Health that feedback from school leaders and community members indicated a demand for a professional who could interact with the schools, benefitting students “as a person in their lives to talk to.”

She said current social worker Chris Bang shared his thoughts about what he has seen as youth orientation in the profession. The job posting closes at the end of the month and interviews will begin in April.

The position is revenue-neutral, Porter indicated, as it reflects some retirement and consolidation in the Youth and Family Services Department over the past several weeks, including the former post of Prevention coordinator. Ironically that job was once held by the newest member of the Board of Health, Maureen Richichi, who was elected Saturday. Porter said that position was created at a time when the town supplemented some counseling services now handled in the schools.
