Letter to the Editor: Supporting Margot Fleischman for Select Board

March 3, 2021

Submitted by Scot Shaw

I am writing to add my voice to those speaking in support of Margot Fleishman for the Select Board. Margot has the experience to find pragmatic approaches to getting things done and retains the passion to use that pragmatism to make Bedford a better place for us all.

My family and I moved to Bedford in 2016, making us relative newcomers here. At my first Town Meeting in that year, never having experienced this form of town government, two things made a very strong impression on me: the honest, respectful, and heartfelt debate that everyone brought to the lengthy meeting; and the presentation Margot made to kick off the discussion on a motion on the warrant. I didn’t know who Margot was, but I was struck by the clarity of her presentation, the depth of her preparation, and the way she deployed facts, figures, and research to back a position about which she was clearly passionate. It was a presentation perfectly pitched for the room, giving anyone on the other side of the issue ample reasons to reconsider without alienating them.

I met Margot again when I attended meetings of the Transportation Advisory Committee, which I later joined and now chair. In that capacity, I have had the pleasure of working alongside Margot and benefitting from the deep experience she has in Bedford. She has been advocating for sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, improved access, and safety throughout Bedford since well before she put her hat in the ring for an elected position. She is still passionate about making things better, and she has the experience to know what has been done in the past, what has worked and what hasn’t, where the pitfalls lie, and how to build community consensus to move forward together.

Perhaps the highest praise I can give is that having people like Margot in our town government inspired me to get involved myself. Please join me in voting for Margot Fleischman for the Select Board on Saturday 13 March.
