What’s this about?
The town will lose 30 trees, some of them lovely, mature trees, for this project, even though DPW Transportation Program Manager, Jeanette Rebecchi, designed the South Road sidewalk with an eye to the environment and preserving trees. Members of BARC, either as committee members or individual residents, are in general agreement with the plan and look forward to seeing the project go forward.
Only 15 trees are slated to replace the 30, and a 3” sapling cannot replace the ecological values of a 33” oak. But the road needs a sidewalk.
The sole item left unresolved for some is one beautiful, mature 18” oak, provider of shade, habitat, traffic safety and so much more.
The town needs an easement of about a foot to lay a five-foot-wide, ADA-compliant sidewalk, or it can narrow a very short strip of the sidewalk to 4 feet wide to save the tree.
The town can plan and construct the short 4-foot strip now, but it would have to wait until after Annual Town Meeting (ATM) to find out whether it can get the easement, because the potential new owner wants to redevelop the parcel into an assisted living facility, a project that will be voted on at ATM.
If that project passes and people are living there, the tree is likely to be welcome and the easement given. Our DPW is busy and this time-frame does not fit its time-line.
