Bedford’s Parent Diversity Council is working to bring the community together, at first through book discussions

The Bedford Parents Diversity Council (PDC) Spring Book Discussion series begins Wednesday evening at 7 over Zoom. This season’s book is Ronald Takaki’s A Different Mirror for Young People: a history of multicultural America. The second and third sessions will be on May 12 and May 26. To receive the Zoom code for the discussions, email the PDC at [email protected]

The 90-minute sessions are open to parents, families, teachers, and school administrators. The PDC’s plan is for most of the discussion to take place in small groups, each moderated by a board member. Each of the three meetings will cover a different section of the book, which participants are encouraged (but not required) to read beforehand. While the series will build themes from one session to the next, “participants will find plenty to discuss, even if they can just attend one meeting,” says PDC Co-President Kelly Korenak

This is PDC’s third discussion series. The previous two have focused on Black American history with Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, and indigenous American history with An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States for Young People by Roxane Dunbar-Ortiz. The Takaki book extends this perspective by also covering the many other ethnic groups that make up America today.

According to Korenak, the purpose of these book discussions is “to introduce new perspectives and think critically about how we learn U.S. history, and whose perspectives are told. Through each of our discussions this year, we wanted to equip families with a deeper awareness of racism, history, and cultural perspectives, and to provide resources and information to have conversations with students in age-appropriate ways.”

Copies of the book are available for $14.60, or free through library download. To receive a book or receive the Zoom code for the sessions, email the PDC at [email protected]
