A New Bear in Town?

Captured on the Schuberth’s ring camera late Friday, April 16, 2021

Evidence of at least one bear on the prowl for backyard birdseed emerged over the weekend.

The most dramatic was a clear image of an ursine visitor recorded on a Ring camera belonging to Anita and Ralph Schuberth of Fayette Road late Friday.

“At first I thought I was seeing things,” said Anita Schuberth, ” but then the moving image stepped onto the snow and it was clearly a bear.” Ralph Schuberth called the police on Saturday morning and learned that a bear had recently been sighted in Lexington.

Several photographs posted by residents on Facebook over the weekend noted severely damaged bird feeders on Old Billerica Road, Wilson Road, North Road, and at the end of South Road abutting Hanscom Field, not far from the Schuberths’.

Response to an inquiry to the town animal control officer was not immediate, pending a press release.

Editor’s Note: Caution is advised, along with securing trash barrels and removing bird feeders.
