Summit Health and Fitness Changing its Name to Club 600; Open House this Saturday, April 10

April 7, 2021

With vaccines rolling out and hope for the new normal getting closer, a sense of rebirth abounds.    Not only for people but for businesses too.  A long-time fixture in Bedford is changing its name.  Summit Health and Fitness is now Club 600/CrossFit Club 600.

Jane and Denis Mezheritskiy bought Summit Health and Fitness last January just before the pandemic hit and forced them to pivot their plans.  Jane is the owner of Moving Forward Physical Therapy, which had been a tenant of Summit. When the current owners ran into trouble and decided to sell Summit,  Jane and Denis, who were aware of the community feeling at Summit, saw the opportunity and decided to buy it.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t too long after that that they were forced to close their doors in March due to the pandemic. Denis said, “We saw it coming,  so a few weeks before we were ordered to close, we started streaming group work-outs and personal training sessions.”  He said that one of the issues they ran into was the need to upgrade all their AV equipment.  They survived the pandemic with the help of their streaming classes and their strong sense of loyalty from their members. Summit always has had a strong sense of community, and Denis went on to say, “The Summit community has really been amazing; although a lot of people have had to suspend their  membership, around 60% of the club kept their membership current during the shutdown.”

During the spring and throughout the summer and fall they continued to have several outside classes.  As the winter came they added barriers and socially distancing protocols to move the classes inside following the Board of Health requirements.   Throughout the year they have been adding equipment to fully equip the facility as a CrossFit gym.

Jane and Denis have always been big fans of CrossFit and are very excited about bringing it to Bedford.  I asked Jane about CrossFit. “When CrossFit first started out it had a reputation of being these loud elite athletes screaming,”  she said. “That’s not what it is, it’s hi-intensity functional fitness.” It really is for anyone, we have a handful of members in their sixties and even one in their seventies doing classes,”  she went on to say.  “Scott, the instructor, is really great at making all the exercises scalable.”   Beyond CrossFit, they continue to have several other options;  spin classes, aerobic training, Pilates, yoga, etc.  In addition to the classes, they have several personal trainers available.

The community feel of the club has always been an important part of the experience.   The rebranding to Club 600 is to reinforce that community feeling.  The name comes from limiting the membership to 600 members, which is currently in the mid-400s.  When they reach 600 members they will stop taking new members.  “We are not hoping to make this a huge club with a pool and other amenities, It’s important to us that we know our members and understand their goals and help them achieve them,” the new owners said.

To celebrate their new reopening  Club 600  will be holding an open house this Saturday. April 10.  This is open to the public, so come check out the new club, take a class, and see what it’s all about.
