‘Town Meeting: Making Your Voice Heard’ ~ A Community Forum Sponsored by The Bedford Citizen

April 22, 2021

What’s the difference between Town Meeting and a town hall meeting? How can a Bedford voter become informed on warrant articles? How does a grassroots organization bring a proposal before town meeting voters?

These are among the many questions that will be addressed at the first in a series of community forums sponsored by The Bedford Citizen next Wednesday.

The virtual program, “Town Meeting: Making Your Voice Heard,” is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Zoom. It will focus on the structure of Town Meeting and its centrality in Bedford civic life.

The agenda is a primer on the town meeting process, which has served Bedford literally through the town’s entire history. The forum does not address specific articles on the 2021 Bedford warrant,

The Zoom webinar, conducted in a question-and-answer format, will feature Bedford’s two most recent moderators, Cathy Cordes and Betsey Anderson. They will review the basis for Town Meeting in Bedford, how the warrant content is organized, and the moderator’s role, among other topics.

Margot Fleischman, chair of the Select Board, will discuss her board’s role in assembling the warrant, preparing information for voters, and special challenges posed by safety considerations during a pandemic.

Other speakers will be Steven Carluccio, chair of the Finance Committee, on his board’s role in reviewing the budget; and Anne Caron and Heather Leavell, residents who will discuss the process they followed to include a proposal to rename Columbus Day on this year’s warrant.
