According to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a cultural district is a specific area in a city or town. It has a number of cultural facilities, activities, businesses, and assets within a compact, walkable area.
The seeds of a Cultural District for Bedford were sown several years ago, and are moving toward fruition after a yearlong pause due to Covid-19.
The application process has been moved forward by an informal group led by Alyssa Sandoval and Tony Fields, Bedford’s Economic Development and Planning directors. They gathered a group of stakeholders including the Bedford Cultural Council, Bedford Arts and Crafts Society, Bedford Historic District Commission, Town Center Inc., Sean Hagan, Artist, Great Road Gallery and Framing, Bedford Chamber of Commerce, and The Bedford Citizen to help define the breadth of Bedford’s cultural resources. The group co-signed the Cultural District application when it was submitted in 2019.
