BHS Softball Remains Undefeated ~ Last Week’s Update

May 29, 2021

That roar you hear over on Railroad Avenue is not highway equipment or an idling jet or a brigade of leaf-blowers.

It’s the 10-0 Bedford High School softball team’s attack machine.

Three games against the Wayland Warriors this week were explosions in Blue, as the Buccaneers scored 52 runs on 47 hits.

The team completes its compressed Dual County League Small Schools season Tuesday and Wednesday versus Weston. There is also a non-league holiday game Monday afternoon at North Middlesex Regional up in Townsend.

The DCL tournament is scheduled for June 10-14, and the first 2020-21 MIAA tournament is scheduled to open on the 17th.

Last Monday at home, the Bucs put their first match of the week against Wayland away early with a 13-run second inning The final score was 21-2, as Katie Kranz, Coco Steele, and Bella Fernald all homered and Syd Poor, Ellie Mitchell, and Cat Oordt registered multiple hits and runs batted in.

Kranz was the winning pitcher, and Cassidy Schuman threw a scoreless inning. Coach Dennis Walsh said Kaylee Grace turned in a “Web Gem” defensive play.

Wednesday’s game was a little different – at east at the start – as the first inning in Wayland ended with a 6-4 Bedford lead. But after adding five runs in the third and seven more in the fourth frame, the outcome was secure. The final was 19-5.

Every player in the Bedford lineup hit safely. Fernald and Mitchell shared the catching responsibilities, dealing with the extreme heat to call a solid game. Grace was the winning pitcher; Schuman also threw a clean inning.

The teams returned to Miss G field Friday, where the hosts completed the sweep. The pitching was a big part of the story, as Kranz and Grace combined for the shutout, striking out nine and allowing just three hits and walking none.

First baseman Laney Mead led the attack with three hits, including a home run and a double and three runs batted in. Schuman and Kranz had two hits apiece and Mitchell added a three-bagger.
