Crack Sealing and Micropaving Bedford’s Roads ~ A Tentative Summer Schedule

Micropaving in action on Concord Road in August, 2020

Please note that as part of our roadway maintenance program for this year, the following roads will be crack sealed and micro paved

  • Shawsheen Road
  • Burlington Road from Old Billerica to just past Old Burlington Road
  • Old Billerica Road from Rt 62 to just before Noreen Drive
  • Crosby Drive
  • Pinehill Road

Crack sealing is the process of placing an adhesive sealant into cracks on the pavement surface, preventing the infiltration of moisture and non-compressible materials into the pavement.

Micro surfacing, micro paving, and micro pavement are surface treatments designed to extend the life of asphalt pavements in good condition by providing skid resistance, restricting moisture intrusion, protecting the structure from further oxidation and raveling, and restoring a uniform black appearance.

The process fixes minor deformities in the road but isn’t used for larger structural issues. As the overall condition index of Bedford’s roads improves, more treatments like micro-surfacing will be used as a component of the paving maintenance program.

Delta Mist is an emulsified version, allowing for spray-applied topical rejuvenating seal that penetrates the surface and softens the asphalt binder to improve cohesion while retarding crack propagation of the pavement surface.

The current tentative schedule is

  1. Structures (like manholes and catch basins) may be adjusted between May 13th to May 19th.
  2. Crack seal will be between May 21st to May 28th, 2021.
  3. Micropaving will be between July 6th to July 13th, 2021.
  4. Delta Mist application will be between July 19th to July 23rd, 2021.

Traffic will be managed by the police on-site; please anticipate delays and plan your trips on these roads accordingly. Vehicle access in and out of properties will be maintained but may be restricted for short periods. Emergency vehicles and vehicles for Town services (trash collection, etc.) will always have access at all times.

Work hours will be 7 AM to 4 PM. Please drive carefully and adhere to traffic rules and signage in construction zones. We will post updates on our DPW website as work progresses or completes.

Thank you for your patience.  Please contact the Department of Public Works at (781) 275-7605 if you have any questions or need additional information.
