Girls Softball: Bedford Tops Boston Latin 14-0

The best thing about Boston Latin School’s 2021 softball season is that the Wolfpack won’t have to play Bedford High again – after Friday.

Katie Kranz didn’t allow a single run, throwing a complete game and leading the Buccaneers to a 14-0 victory on Wednesday. That followed a 9-3 Bedford win over BLS on Monday.

And the two teams meet once more this Friday at 4 at Helen Gfroerer Field.

Bedford, now 3-0 in 2021, scored what turned out to be the winning run Wednesday in the first inning on an RBI single by Bella Fernald. A five-run fifth inning but the game out of reach; Cassidy Schuman and Laney Mead led the attack.

Two Buccaneers blasted home runs in this game. Kranz had a four-bagger in the fourth inning and Laney Mead had a dinger in the fifth inning.  Mead and Kranz each registered two hits to lead the varsity.

A five-run, two-out, third-inning rally paced the led Bedford win on Monday. The offensive onslaught came from doubles by Fernald and Schuman and a home run by Kranz, who drove in four on the day.

Kaylee Grace got the win. She surrendered three runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out five. The Bucs totaled eight hits. Sydney Poor and Fernald each collected two.

The girls opened the season last week with a 5-4 victory over Concord-Carlisle, taking the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The game was tied when Mead tripled on the first pitch of her at bat to drive in the deciding run. She had two hits, leading a seven-hit attack that included a double by Schuman.

Grace earned the win. The fireballer went six innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out nine. Kranz threw the final inning out of the bullpen, striking out two Patriots for the save.
