Hanscom Taxiway Resurfacing is Scheduled to Begin on August 1

June 11, 2021

Resurfacing of a Hanscom Field taxiway is scheduled to begin on Aug. 1. And that means a lot of dump trucks plying Hartwell Road between Concord Road and the airfield access near the Edge Sports Center.

But town officials emphasize that this project in no way approaches the magnitude of the runway resurfacing of July 2017, which disrupted neighborhoods with heavy traffic and 24-hour activity.

Town Manager Sarah Stanton described the project to the Select Board at its virtual meeting Monday.

She presented a comparison that illustrates the difference between the two resurfacing projects. The so-called 11/29 runway area is 2.2 million square feet of asphalt. The taxiway is 60,000 square feet, about a quarter of the floor space of Bedford High School. That’s less than .03 percent of the 11/29 runway, which is more than a mile long.

The number of expected dump truck trips is 400, said board member Emily Mitchell, a member of the Hanscom Field Advisory Commission. Massport will present an overview of the project at next Tuesday’s commission meeting.

The taxiway is labeled N and is called November using the phonetic alphabet. It is a short north-south connector between the runway and taxiway R. The location is close to Hartwell Road; South Road, which was a main access point to the runway, will not be involved.

Stanton, who said she has discussed the details with Hanscom Field Director Sharon Williams, said the resurfacing will be scheduled for all of August during normal business hours.

“We are working with the Massport team and we will have open communication lines,” she said, including a special telephone number for calling in complaints or questions.

Editor’s Note: It is expected that the taxiway repaving will be presented during Tuesday evening’s Hanscom Field Advisory Commission meeting so that Massport is able to incorporate comments and concerns in its public statement.
