Thursday morning’s partial eclipse of the sun saw Bedford residents watching locally, and further afield.

A gathering on Clark Field drew a small but ardent crew to watch the eclipse. According to ten-year-old Olivia Daugherty, seeing the moon cross the face of the sun was “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious;” then she added with a grin, “Amazing.”

Alan MacRobert, a semi-retired senior editor at Sky and Telescope magazine, was on hand with a pair of special binoculars to watch the progress of the eclipse. MacRobert later noted, “It is amazing that these things happen precisely with total reliability. They are an example of how celestial mechanics are a predictable, linear system compared to just about everything on earth which is chaotic and non-linear, people especially!”

Mitch and Steve Evans rose at 4 am and trekked to Long Island near Lynn to watch, posting photos to Facebook later in the morning. “There were some clouds and it was difficult to photograph,” said Mitch, “but you could see the crescent shape. Beautiful!”

If you missed the fun early on Thursday, according to MacRobert in his eclipse preview article, “A total eclipse of the sun is indeed coming to New England in less than three years. On April 8, 2024, the moon’s dark shadow will sweep along a path from Mexico and Texas northeast across northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Texas has better clear-sky prospects, but northern New England will be less than a day’s drive.”
