Q&A with Shannon Dillon ~ Creative Images of Boston

Shannon Dillon

In addition to her avocation, the Bedford Doll Hospital, Shannon Dillon is an accomplished photographer; she recently spoke with reporter Linda White to answer questions for this article.

How long have you been a photographer?
All my life! Professionally since 1996.

Did you attend a special photography program?
Yes! I graduated in 1996 from the Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners Falls.

Have you worked for other photography studios?
Yes! It was the best learning experience of what to do and what not to do. I worked for others for many years before starting my own business.

How and why did you establish Creative Images Boston?
After my son was born in 2009, I realized that I wanted to give him everything he needed and wanted. I wouldn’t be able to do that if I was always working for other people.

Are you the sole proprietor and worker bee?
Yes! Although my husband helps on “Picture Day” high volume shoots. Not to mention working a full-time job and taking over parenting duties the second he gets home from work, and all weekend!

Film or digital preference?
Digital! I learned on film and began my career as a film photographer because digital wasn’t really a thing back then. I hesitantly switched to digital around 2000 because I was working for modeling agencies and they were all changing their formats. The ability to immediately see my work drastically improved the quality of my photography. I could see what was wrong, fix it and do it correctly right away, instead of waiting a week to view the negatives and wondering what was off.

Have your interests changed over time?
Yes! I used to try to do every type of photography. Weddings, events, products, etc. I wanted to prove that I could do it all. At some point, I realized that I wanted to concentrate on what I love to do, which is Families, Seniors, Modeling, Headshots, and Picture Days.

How would you characterize the bulk of your business?
Families and Graduating Seniors!

Has Covid impacted or changed your business?
Yes! It taught me how to be more adaptable. Last year, I did a photo project, called the Togetherness Project. It not only gave me a way to show how people were adapting their lives, but it also pushed me to adapt the way that I shoot and edit. It has pushed me to be more creative and let go of some control.

Have other members of your family caught the photo bug?
My husband is a great photographer! We have very different styles and subject matter. He’s also amazing at the technical side and knows everything about every piece of equipment. My kids have a great eye for photography. My son, Julio (11) loves to create images in Photoshop and my daughter, Juliette (6) has an amazing eye for cell phone pictures.

What type of photography gives you the most personal pleasure?
All of it. I especially love Seniors. I love making them feel comfortable, getting to know them, and giving them a fun experience to remember.

How do you feel about others taking your photo?
I don’t mind at all.
