Bedford will mark Independence Day Sunday with a small but significant ceremony.

Jon O’Connor, immediate past commander of American Legion Post 221, has organized the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence beginning at 10 a.m. adjacent to the Patriot statue at Veterans Memorial Park.

The tradition was revived in 2017 by O’Connor who attributed its origin to the late John Filios when he was active with the Bedford Minuteman Company.

O’Connor said he divided the text of the declaration into four parts and will be joined on Sunday by three other readers.
