Hanscom Aircraft Operations Back to Pre-Covid Level

July 5, 2021

Aircraft operations at Hanscom Field have almost completely erased the statistical aberration of the year of Covid-19.

According to data compiled by the Massachusetts Port Authority, there were 11,774 takeoffs and landings during May. That’s a 222 percent increase from the same month a year earlier.

But when compared to May 2019, the differential is only 239 fewer, less than 2 percent.

The most dramatic category of change from a year ago May was single-engine planes, a 495 percent increase. But the comparable numbers in 2019 and 2021 are 2,967 and 2,885, respectively, less than 1 percent.

Night operations in May 2021 totaled 183, compared to 65 a year earlier and 240 the year before that.

One category that increased significantly from 219 was noise disturbance reports—from 228 to 306 (there were 54 in 2020). The complaints this year were filed by 32 households from 12 cities and towns. One household last month registered 93 complaints, an average of three per day.

Reports are filed by phone or using a device called an “Airnoise button.” Amber Goodspeed, manager of airport administration, said Massport doesn’t differentiate on the device used for filing.
