At 2:39 p.m. on Thursday, August 12, Massachusetts State Police Major Matthew Gravini pulled over a Nissan Altima on Route 3 westbound in Bedford. While stopped in the breakdown lane behind the Altima, the Major’s black Ford Police Interceptor was struck from behind by a Honda CRV SUV.

Major Gravini, assigned to the Division of Field Services as the commander of State Police Troop A, was in his cruiser when it was hit. The impact of the crash pushed Major Gravini’s cruiser into the right travel lane; the CRV then struck the Altima.

Major Gravini was transported to Lahey Hospital in Burlington with non-life-threatening injuries. The operator of the CRV, a 64-year-old Wilmington woman, was also transported to Lahey with non-life-threatening injuries. The operator of the Altima was not injured.

The reason for the initial motor vehicle stop was for traffic violations.

The crash remains under investigation. The scene is now cleared.
