Bedford’s first director of housing and economic development has accepted a position with an international design firm as a senior environmental planner.

Alyssa Sandoval’s final day in Bedford will be Oct. 8. After that, she will be focusing on urban infrastructure projects and transportation planning for Stantec.

“Alyssa has worked hard and creatively on behalf of Bedford,” said Town Manager Sarah Stanton. “I am so excited for Alyssa to embark on this next chapter of her career and thankful that Bedford was able to have her as part of the team for as long as we did.”

Stanton said the vacancy is being advertised immediately.

Sandoval, hired by former Town Manager Richard Reed,  joined the town staff part-time in May 2014 as economic development director, after six years as a senior planner and program manager with VHB, the planning firm.

Town meeting in 2019 elevated the position to full time, and Stanton added the housing portfolio several months ago

“Alyssa is leaving the community better than when she arrived,” Stanton commented. She cited a range of recent achievements: “leading the charge for expedited permitting; working closely with our biotech and life sciences companies to expand Bedford’s footprint in the industry; helping our restaurants weather the storm of Covid-19 with opportunities for outdoor dining.

“Alyssa’s long-term love has always been planning and urban infrastructure,” Stanton continued.  “She’s returning to her pre-Bedford passion, with an excellent firm, and a very big job.” The departing director, who grew up in California, earned a master’s degree in planning at Cornell University and is licensed by the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Stantec describes itself as a “top-tier global design and delivery firm.” The company is based in Edmonton, Alberta, with offices in Burlington and Boston.
