Town Boards, Committees to Meet by Zoom Until Dec. 6

September 17, 2021

The Select Board and other municipal elected and appointed committees will continue meeting virtually until at least Dec. 6.

The decision was reached at Monday’s Select Board meeting, which had been targeted several weeks ago to address the issue.

“I think we are in a different place than we thought we would be in June,” commented board member Emily Mitchell.

Her colleague William Moonan agreed and suggested the board “hold tight through the fall and see if this thing is spiking or going away.” Board member Edward Pierce suggested the Dec. 6 target, because that’s when the Select Board historically begins meeting weekly. He said some private companies with which he works have delayed their September targets to return.

Board Chair Margot Fleischman added that a few towns that returned to in-person meetings have since retreated back on Zoom.

“Not all of our residents and our staff are comfortable with meeting in person,” said Town Manager Sarah Stanton, especially people with children too young to be vaccinated. “We should minimize risk.” She said her office will relay the message to the other boards and committees.

Stanton also informed the board that challenges have been identified with new technology that is designed to transmit live meetings to virtual recipients. Masks, which are still required, make the audio “a little muddled,” she said, and the program also requires two people to operate.
