During her demonstration, Delyanis will convey a sense of her approach to pastel painting.
My demo will show how I approach using pastel to create landscapes. I will be working from a photo of water and foliage in New England in the fall.
Pastel is a medium of layering–unlike oil or acrylic, pastel requires overlaying to achieve the necessary colors.
Working on sanded paper, I start with a line drawing in vine charcoal; I then block in large areas of relatively dark values. It is generally best to work from dark to light and to move from harder pastels to softer ones. Once everything is blocked in, it is necessary to work from top to bottom to prevent pastel dust from disrupting lower areas. Typically I work on a piece for a few weeks, with texture and color subtly developing as the drawing progresses. So, in the demo, I can’t produce a “finished” piece, but I hope to convey a sense of my approach.
