A reminder that Special Town Meeting is tomorrow night—Monday, November 1—at 7 pm, and that the warrant includes an important item: the proposal to allow four stories, including two stories of smaller housing on the top two floors, at a couple of locations on Great Rd. The buildings would have to be behind other buildings.
The zoning amendment also calls for extensive streetscaping, including wide sidewalks, benches, shade trees, and a grass barrier between the sidewalk and the street. These amenities would support a sense of place and foster a community gathering place in a key part of town near other amenities, including public transportation.
The Council on Aging Board, among others, will be speaking in support of this amendment because it is senior-friendly: it will give older adults much-needed options for downsizing. Overall the amendment supports critically needed housing diversity in Bedford while encouraging revitalization of an important section of town.
I hope everyone will attend the meeting and vote for the amendment, and encourage friends and neighbors to do so also.
