The Bedford High School marching band turned in its best performance of the year at just the right time.

The student-musicians received an overall bronze medal and scored four out of five stars for musical performance at the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association State Band Finals on Oct. 24.

“The band staff couldn’t be more proud of these young people,” declared Director Jim Felker. He explained that at these festivals, the bands are rated against a rubric as opposed to being in head-to-head competition.

Felker related that after a year adversely affected by the pandemic, which resulted in no marching band at all, “the staff was very concerned about the potential to even field a band due to fears of low turnout. “

“Many students put their instruments down because of the lack of ability to play in a group until late in the year, so the future of the band was uncertain,” he explained.

But the story had a happy ending. “A small, dedicated core of returning students, augmented by some enthusiastic newcomers, took on the moniker of the Small, but Mighty Marching Band, and worked very hard to make the program a reality.”

He pointed out that there are nine seniors, “so recruitment efforts are already underway to build the numbers back stronger for fall.”
