Bucs Roundup: Swimming and Wrestling

Bedford High School swim teams have started the 2021-22 competitive season, and the virtual meets of last season are just a memory.

“We are back to swimming in person, and it really is amazing how much the in-person competition is a motivator,” said Coach Samantha Thyne. Races were decided by comparative times in separate pools as last season’s response to the threat of Covid-19.

The boys’ swim team defeated Waltham, 104-50. Matsen Spirn swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.98, beating the sectionals qualifying time by one-one hundredth of a second.

Waltham was the winner in the girls’ meet, 92-62, but there were some notable performances. The medley relay quartet of Noelle Lee, Sarah Wirth, Elora Syed, and Sally MacPhee qualified for the sectionals with a time of two minutes, 8.4 seconds. The qualifying threshold is 2:13.22.

In other winter sports action, the BHS/Acton-Boxborough cooperative wrestling team won two contests in a multiple dual meet on Saturday, defeating Wellesley, 45-16, and Belmont, 45-28. The team also lost to Triton Regional.

Junior Emil Colon, the team’s heavyweight and a first-year wrestler, won his first match,  pinning his Wellesley opponent in double overtime.
