BHS Boys Basketball Win, 60-48, in a First-Ever Victory over Cambridge Rindge & Latin

January 15, 2022

This was a statement win.

The Bedford High School Buccaneers defeated Cambridge Rindge & Latin School Friday night, 60-48. It was the first Bedford boys’ basketball victory over the Falcons ever.

“It was a complete team effort. Every guy contributed in his own way,” said Head Coach Anthony Halls.

It was a convincing victory—Bedford led by 12 at the half and the Falcons never got closer than nine. And it followed disappointing road losses to Westford and Arlington, elevating the Bucs’ 2021-22 record to 6-3.

Halls said this was the most complete game of the season. He was pleased with the Bucs’ ball pressure and rebounding “and we limited our turnovers.” The coach added that the team felt they let the two recent losses get away, so “the word of the night for us was to finish. I thought we played a complete 32 minutes.”

This team seems to have a different go-to guy every week, and this time it was sophomore point guard Justice Buchannan with 23 points and eight rebounds. Senior Matthew Forman added 15 and eight.

Halls said he informed Buchannan during the week that he would be getting his first start at Cambridge. “I told him, ‘As long as you keep your poise, everything will be fine,’” Halls recounted.

“I was really proud of him for the way he stepped up,” he continued. “He’s a sophomore with a high upside, and he did an exceptional job.” Halls said Buchannan excelled at getting to the basket. “He gave us the punch that we needed.”

Most of the Buccaneers are seniors, and the coach was especially happy for their success. They’re winning more than they did as underclassmen, and that means now “when they lose, it bothers them more. They come back the next day to practice, ready to be better.”

There were no spectators at War Memorial Gymnasium in Cambridge, part of the schools’ Covid-19 policies.

The Bucs visit Weston High School Tuesday and are scheduled to finally return to the BHS gymnasium Friday against Boston Latin. However, interscholastic sports have been suspended all month in the Boston Public Schools in response to the coronavirus, and the last report said they wouldn’t resume until Jan. 24.
