Candidate Announcement: Ron O’Brien for Select Board

~ Submitted by Ron O’Brien

I am excited to put my name forward as a candidate for the Bedford Select Board.  My family and I moved to Bedford 20 years ago and I‘ve grown to love this town that I consider my family’s home.

I have been an active volunteer in Bedford for 20-years.  I served on the Bedford Conservation Commission for 7-years.  While raising my family with my wife LoriAnn, I coached Little League Baseball, Bedford Soccer, and Recreation Basketball for 10-years, and chaperoned many public school field trips.  More recently, after enjoying many yearly visits from the Bedford Santa, we decided to give back, by donating our family’s time each year to the Bedford Santa program to help bring the same joy to families that we had enjoyed for so long.

My life experiences and professional career have been foundational to prepare me for a seat on the Select Board.  I am a registered Professional Civil Engineer and have designed, built, and managed every aspect of typical town infrastructure and buildings.  I have successfully executed multi-million dollar capital projects and managed large operations divisions to support institutions such as the Intel Corporation, MITRE, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

I have decades of experience running large facility’s organizations, managing operational and capital budgets, negotiating fair effective union contracts, and making rational decisions to ensure sustainability and viability.

In addition to my current role as the Director of Facilities Operations at WPI, I am a contributing author to the McGraw-Hill Text Book, Facilities Engineering and Management Handbook: Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional Buildings and I teach Operations Management and Financial Management for the Master’s Program at Massachusetts Maritime, as a part-time professor.  My professional experiences uniquely qualify me to help guide Bedford back from the challenges of the last 2 years.

But my candidacy is more than my desire to leverage my professional expertise to help effectively manage Bedford; it is my sincere desire to give back to the community that enabled my family and I to thrive and evolve in a vibrant, stable, and safe environment.  I will be a faithful steward to continue Bedford’s successful fiscal strategies and community development.

As your Select Board Member I will continue to bring us together and build on our vast strengths and carry on our legacy as a well-managed community-based town.  Bedford is an amazing and unique small town with boundless opportunities.  With honest open dialogue and transparency, Bedford will continue to thrive for many generations. I ask for your support and look forward to listening to all viewpoints during my campaign.
