How a Lost Cat has Helped a Somewhat New-to-Bedford Family Find a Home Town

Zeke has been missing since November. He and his sister Zoe escaped from their cat carrier when the handle broke and the carrier popped open in the parking lot of The Cat Doctor on The Great Road.

Their dad frantically tried to find them while their mom put up a posting on Facebook. Within minutes, residents on Sunset, Oregon, and Alaska banded together to look for the duo.

Fortunately, Zoe was discovered the next day, but Zeke has eluded all efforts to bring him home. He was out there – he was seen on a critter camera several weeks later – but no one is quite sure where he is now.

Heartbreaking as this whole process has been, as with just about anything that is difficult, there has been a silver lining.

Fairly new to Bedford, Zeke’s family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support they have received. Texts, calls, postings on Facebook—with sightings, questions, and words of encouragement.

Residents have been outdoors at night calling Zeke’s name, others have searched through streets and backyards with flashlights.

One day Zeke’s owner and her toddler son came across a group of children out looking for him. The kids searched and played together for hours, and new friendships were formed.

Critter Cams were set up on those first streets, and as sightings spread to Dunster and even Gould Roads, residents willingly allowed the family to set up cameras there as well. Some families set up Havahart traps, and others have placed some of Zeke’s toys out to lure him with a familiar scent.  Sheds and porches were made accessible so he would have a place to stay safe.

This is just scratching the surface of what our fellow Bedfordites have been doing for a fairly new-to-town family, and a cat they don’t even know.

Maybe someone has brought Zeke into their home not realizing how frantic his owners are to find him.

Zeke’s family asks that we all talk to our friends, and ask if they have heard of someone who has a new cat. Show Zeke’s photo. It will only take a moment.

Even though it has been months of searching filled with worry, no one is giving up hope. The family is eternally grateful to our little town—to the neighborhoods on high alert; to the FB thread that continues to be updated.

Zeke may not be home (yet), but his family has surely found one here in Bedford.

Now I am crying! Your family is so sweet and I am so sorry Zeus is still not out there! We will keep looking. I saw a black cat yesterday on Oregon and my heart kept… only to realize that it was not Zeke. I will never forget the kids playing together. Our group is a wild little band and your little guy brought them together. They were completely smitten with him!
We are so happy your family is here in Bedford! It truly is a wonderful place.
