Letter to the Editor: Arbor Resources Committee Regarding Hiring a Sustainability Director

~ Submitted by the Arbor Resources Committee:  Daniel Churella, Chair, Deborah Edinger Jaci Edwards, Molly Haskell, Daniel Smythe, Jr, and Bobbi Tornheim

We, the Bedford Arbor Resources Committee, endorse the hiring of a Sustainability Director for Bedford.

Sustainability is a goal established by political will.  Delivery is the work of a professional.   As a Town employee, a Sustainability Director would have the agency to build consensus and community support for sustainability goals, strategies, and measures.  A director can research and apply for grants, create plans for review, and execute when approved and funded.   A director provides managerial oversight to establish baselines, measure progress, resolve conflicts and adjust process as indicated by results.

Bedford already has shown political will and community support for many measures to make the Town greener and more carbon-neutral, as demonstrated in the many committees and groups that are either directly or indirectly related to sustainability.  A Sustainability Director could act as coordinating office for many Bedford organizations such as the Energy and Sustainability Committee, Bicycle Advisory Committee, the Conservation Commission, Arbor Resources Committee, and the Transportation Committee.

A Sustainability Director would provide traction to get to the future Bedford has already decided to pursue.

We hope the Select Board and the Town Manager view our recommendation favorably.
