Celebrating Senior Night, 2022

It took two high schools to beat the Buccaneers on Senior Night.

Actually, the Dracut and Tyngsborough high schools’ hockey programs went cooperative several years ago in order to survive. Saturday night the Middies converted three consecutive power plays and held off Bedford High School Buccaneers, 4-2, in a Dual County League/Merrimack Valley Conference game at The Edge Sports Center.

The outcome was particularly ironic for the Bucs, who came into the game with a 40 percent conversion rate when skating with a man advantage. But Saturday night they were one for five, including almost a half-minute with a five-on-three.

Bedford never led. After DT’s Mike Desmarais opened the scoring seven minutes in, the Bucs tied the game when freshman Drew Siwik carried the puck the length of the ice and put it behind Andrew Kazanjian unassisted.

That lasted for less than a minute-and-a-half, as the Middies scored, again with a man advantage. And they made it 3-1 early in the second period, against five-on-four, again by Desmarais.

For the rest of the second period, Bedford had a clear territorial advantage, but managed only one score: Twenty-one seconds into a power play, sophomore Blake Stuzynski fired in a feed from Chris Woo, beating Kazanjian on the doorstep to make it 3-2 with 7:03 on the second-period clock.

The Buccaneers continued to buzz around the DT zone, peppering Kazanjian with 17 shots over the entire frame. But he stopped all but one.

The play was much more even in the third period, which was penalty-free until there were 10 seconds to play,

Senior goalie TJ Mead sustained the one-goal deficit with two stellar saves, one of them on a breakaway at the 10-minute mark.

The goal that put the game out of reach was scored by Drew DuRoss with 6:42 remaining. Mead sticked aside a shot from Cam Caron, but DuRoss was right there to fire the rebound home.

Coach Brian Seabury pulled Mead from the net with two-and-half minutes remaining. Most of that time was spent in the DT zone, but the Bucs never really tested Kazanjian, who made 25 saves. Mead had 22.

Bedford, now 7-4-2, will look to return to its winning ways against Hamilton-Wenham at The Edge on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
