COVID-19 Mitigation Strategies for Seniors ~ from the Bedford Board of Health

March 10, 2022

The Bedford Board of Health continues to promote public health strategies for all Bedford community members to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic. These mitigation strategies include vaccination, having a plan in case of illness, test and stay home when ill, isolating when required, testing before or after activities, wearing a face covering, increasing ventilation, washing your hands, covering your cough and sneeze, sanitizing commonly touched surfaces, and additional general well-being reminders. With current high levels of vaccination and high levels of population immunity from both vaccination and infections, the risk of medically significant disease, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19 is greatly reduced for most people. At the same time, the CDC cautions that some people and communities, such as our oldest citizens, people who are immunocompromised, and people with disabilities, are at higher risk for serious illness and face challenging decisions navigating a world with COVID-19.

Older adults are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19. Getting very sick means that older adults with COVID-19 might need hospitalization, intensive care, or a ventilator to help them breathe, or could even result in death. The risk increases for people in their 50s and increases in 60s, 70s, and 80s. People 85 and older are the most likely to get very sick. Other factors can also make you more likely to get severely ill with COVID-19, such as having certain underlying medical conditions. If you have an underlying medical condition, you should continue to follow your treatment plan, unless advised differently by your health care provider. Additional information for COVID-19 risks and vaccination information for older adults may be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/aging/covid19/covid19-older-adults.html. As always, if you have concerns or questions regarding your personal health, consult your healthcare provider.

If you are experiencing feelings of isolation or impacts from a loss, the Bedford Health and Human Services Department can connect residents to various social service supports, counseling and resources (food, personal care items, clothing, heat assistance, access to volunteer/social groups). If you are age 60+ contact the Council on Aging at 781-275- 6825 and if you are under age 60 contact the Youth and Family Services Department at 781-275-7727, for assistance.
