Letter to the Editor: Regarding a Location for a New Fire Station

~ Submitted by John Stella

Two years ago, the town of Bedford proposed to buy the land, and tear down the building at 175 Great Road office building that houses the TD Bank and build a fire station.

I am a TD Bank customer and I oppose the town to tear down 175 Great Road office building and close down TD Bank.

Many TD Bank customers are opposed and outraged by this proposed move by the Town.  Many TD Bank customers do not want this bank closed. Many TD Bank customers sent a message and pressured the Town of Bedford to not tear down the office building and close down the bank.

The good news for Bedford TD Bank customers is that the 175 Great Road office building will not close and the TD bank will stay open.   The TD office provides banking services to strong loyal TD Bank customers in Bedford. The bank will continue to stay open at 175 Great Rd.

I have been studying and hearing from Bedford folks pros and cons about the Town’s proposal to tear down a historic building at 139 The Great Road and build a proposed fire station there.  Many residents have concerns about this site.

If voters approve articles 8 and 9 to pass the fire station, this will cause your property taxes to go up to buy the land, tear down the building, and build a fire station.  This will cost more for town and taxpayers. I strongly recommend that voters should not approve articles 8 and 9 for a proposed fire station.  Please make your voice heard by attending Town Meeting on Monday night, March 28th at 7pm at the Bedford High School.

The current fire station at 55 Great Road is in good condition and should be preserved.  This fire station at 55 Great Road is a beautiful building to preserve.      This building needs to be expanded and renovated with the former police station right next to the fire station.

I strongly recommend that the Town should renovate and expand fire station at 55 Great Road.  It will save money for the town and taxpayers to renovate and expand the current fire station at lower costs and lower expenses.  This won’t cause overruns, if the town decides to renovate and expand the fire station at 55 Great Road.
