Interim Chief of Police Kenneth Fong and the Bedford Police Department are proud to recognize Autism Acceptance Month by offering commemorative patches to the community.

Bedford Police Officers are authorized this month to wear the Autism awareness patches on their uniforms as the department seeks to support those in the community affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Bedford Police will hand out or mail patches to those in the community who request them. Bedford Police in turn request that those receiving patches make a donation to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. Recipients are asked to make their donations directly to the foundation. Those interested in the patches should contact Officer Jeffrey French by emailing [email protected].

“I urge everyone to help us as we work to raise awareness and acceptance of Autism Spectrum Disorder, while also supporting a wonderful organization like the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism,” said Interim Chief Fong. “Those on the autism spectrum make wonderful contributions to our community, and I hope we will all work together to support them as much as we can.”

The department will also help to raise awareness and increase acceptance of Autism Spectrum Disorders by participating in Light It Up Blue, a nationwide event in which law enforcement agencies across the country recognize World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. All patrols who are not handling an active call will pull over to the side of the road and turn on their cruiser’s blue lights at 7:30 p.m. to raise awareness of autism.

A limited amount of autism awareness seat belt covers are also available at no charge. Those who would like a seat belt cover should contact Officer French to request one while supplies last.
