Growing up in Bedford, one of the best days of the year was undoubtedly walking to school with all my friends in the morning. The feeling of pride and satisfaction when we got to school was unmatched.

Walk and bike to school day is a statewide activity, so Bedford has ways to help kids safely get to school.

“Bedford’s award-winning Safe Routes to School program celebrates this year’s Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Day on May 4th.  All families are encouraged to have their child try walking, biking, or rolling from home or from a convenient drop-off spot near their school,” said Mark Bailey, chair of Bedford’s Bicycle Advisory Committee.

“Lane School students who get a taste for the independence and fresh air of active transit tend to keep it up for years to come, packing the bike racks at JGMS and beyond.”

For biking, there will be a chaperone-led bike-to-school group just for Lane-schoolers. The chaperoned bike ride will meet at the entrance to the Narrow Gauge rail trail at the intersection of Hillside Ave and The Great Road.

Parents will be able to park in the Bank of America Parking lot and can drop their kids and their bikes off for the trip to school. Unfortunately, it is near impossible to organize a mass return at the end of the school day so families will have to make individual plans.

Not only is Walk-Bike-Roll a fun way to start your morning off on the right foot, but it also happens to have many health benefits. Walking not only improves your mood but also helps build strong and important muscles for your day-to-day life.

The health benefits don’t just apply to people; the more people that walk or bike help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce congestion around the school zone drop-off.

The walk and bike to school day is a fun and healthy way to kick off Spring and get in shape. Hope you join us on Wednesday, May 4th.

A chaperoned ride on May 4th will depart from the Bank of America parking lot at Hillside Ave. and Great Rd. Students should be dropped off by 7:55 AM to leave promptly at 8:00 AM for a lovely 2-mile, 15-minute trip up the Narrow Gauge Trail to Lane. Note that there will not be a chaperoned ride home after school, so families will need to make other arrangements for the afternoon.

What is the meeting time at Hillside Ave and The Great Road? I can’t find it in email or on town/school websites.
