Cars and Coffee ~ Saturday, May 7 from 11 am to 1 pm

~ Submitted by Dan Bostwick on behalf of the Energy and Sustainability Committee

The Energy and Sustainability Committee is hosting an event to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and celebrate the recently installed electric vehicle charging station at Depot Park.  On Saturday, May 7, from 11 am to 1 pm, stop by Depot Park on Loomis Street to see some EVs and learn more about them.

The Green Energy Consumers Alliance will provide coffee and pastries and will have a representative to answer questions about purchasing and owning an EV.  EV owners will also be there to display their vehicles and answer your questions. At 11:30 am, Revise Energy will present the Town with a generous donation towards the installation of the EV charging station at Depot Park.

Over the past several years, the Town has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability and reducing reliance on fossil fuels by installing 12 charging stations on municipal property.   In 2021, Bedford’s EV charging stations saved 50.2 tons of carbon dioxide and avoided the use of 8,053 gallons of gas.

According to the US Dept of Energy, sales of electric vehicles in the US have nearly doubled in the past year. There are many benefits to owning an EV. Electric vehicle owners save on maintenance and fuel, especially given the high price of gasoline nowadays. One of the biggest pluses of owning an EV is the environmental benefit that comes from not burning gasoline to power your vehicle. Regardless of the source of the electricity used to charge an EV, an EV generates far less greenhouse gas over its lifetime than a gasoline-powered vehicle.  Even in countries where electricity is generated by burning coal (which is the dirtiest source for electricity generation) studies show that EVs are better for the environment than gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles. EV are also a lot of fun to drive due to their quick pick-up and low-speed torque.

Come learn about owning an EV that will save you money, save the environment, and add some fun to your commute!
