Paving Update ~ Shim Course and Overlay Work to Begin on Friday, May 6

~ Submitted by the Town of Bedford Department of Public Works

WHO: Newport Corp.

WHAT: Newport Corp. will apply an overlay course/shim course on Warren, Selfridge, Meadowbrook Roads in Bedford

WHY: A shim course is a temporary measure used in locations where the roadway is in a state of failure but additional utility work is required before a permanent roadway surface is completed. This utility work is currently scheduled and prioritized for these locations, so the shim course is a stop-gap measure used to provide adequate service to drivers until the utility work is complete. As a temporary measure, this treatment will not trigger a moratorium as the other treatments do and roadway cuts will be allowed through a street opening permit. If you have utility work on a shim course street, please consider completing it before the permanent roadway surface is applied in the next few years.

WHERE: Warren Ave, Selfridge Rd, Meadowbrook Rd, Birchwood Dr, Sherwood Dr, Earl Rd, and Mill Dam Rd

WHEN: Work will start on Warren Ave and Selfridge Rd on Friday, May 6th. Working hours will be 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday thru Friday. Meadowbrook Rd and the remaining streets will be attended to during the week of May 9th. It is estimated that this portion of the project will be completed by Wednesday, May 18th weather permitting.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

  • Typical construction noise and minor traffic delays. Allot additional time and plan accordingly.
  • Police may be present while work is being performed. Potential lane closures with posted traffic control signs. For your safety and for the safety of the workers in the field, please obey all posted traffic control signs and workers. Please be mindful of the work.
  • On-street parking may be restricted. Posted restrictions will be enforced. Any vehicles parked within the construction zone will be towed away by the Bedford Police Department at the owner’s expense.
  • Even though not-recommended, typically you can drive on the freshly overlaid pavement in 30-40 minutes when the temperatures are right.
