On Friday, May 6, from 4 to 7 PM, most people’s main concern was getting home and starting the weekend. However, one group had a very different agenda. A band of protesters, mainly students, gathered in front of the First Parish Church in order to show their frustration over the recent Supreme Court leak.
The Supreme Court leak came as an unwanted surprise to many as Justice Alito’s majority opinion on overturning Roe v Wade became public. What this ruling would do at its official announcement, probably in June of this year, is remove the accepted law and practice of abortions being legal in the entire United States and let the individual states decide for themselves. While Massachusetts has no plans to remove this right fear was struck in many citizens’ hearts.
Led and organized by two BHS students, Toby Favalora and Jackie Cutrona, this protest should act as a glimmer of hope in a world that gets more depressing by the minute. A symbol to all that the next generation, Gen Z, will not step aside and “let the adults handle it”. A symbol of how students plan to get together to organize, lead, and fight for a more perfect union.
