The Bedford High School boys’ tennis team will compete for a slot in the MIAA Division 3 state Final Four Sunday at 4 p.m. on the BHS courts.

Coach John Geilfuss’s third-ranked Bucs, who cruised past Austin Preparatory Wednesday afternoon, will meet the winner of tomorrow’s match between Boston Latin Academy, ranked 11th, and sixth-seeded Apponequet Regional of Lakeville.

“Every year, our goal is to get into the playoffs,” said Coach John Geilfuss after the win. “Once we get in, we have a good shot, because our league is so competitive. It prepares us.”

Owen Goss played first singles Wednesday and won in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Third singles Spencer Goss prevailed, 6-01, 6-0. Both doubles teams were successful in two sets: Dillon Derby-Brown and Adam Capobianco, 6-2, 6-0; and Drew Watson and Shaun Isobe, 6-2, 6-4. Ittai Weisman absorbed the defeat in second singles.

Geilfuss has coached boys’ tennis at BHS for more than 20 years and his teams have won two state titles.

He said he finds the new statewide power-ranked tournament exciting. Past regional playoffs weren’t as balanced and the draw could seem random. This time, he acknowledged, each match is tougher than the last one.

Apponequet has lost just twice this spring, both to Dartmouth High School. Boston Latin Academy is not Boston Latin School of the Dual County League.
