BHS Girls’ Lacrosse Team Roars into Elite Eight

June 11, 2022

The Bedford High School Buccaneers exploded into the Elite Eight of the MIAA Division 2 girls lacrosse state tournament Saturday night, crushing Leominster, 20-6.

Bedford will host the winner of Sunday’s match between sixth-ranked Dartmouth and 11th-seeded Burlington, most likely Tuesday evening at Sabourin Field. The winner advances to the Final Four.

Leominster was 19th in the regular-season state Division 2 power rankings but reached the second round after upsetting Milton High. And for the first 18 minutes Saturday, the visiting Blue Devils made it a game.

The Bucs led by just a 5-4 margin when Abby Morrissey scored on a free shot with 7:15 remaining in the first half. That opened the floodgates, as Bedford scored 14 more over a span of more than 25 minutes before Leominster scored again.

Bedford added four more over the remainder of the first half, including Sophie Morrissey’s solo effort from the left side with six seconds remaining.

Six minutes into the second half, the margin was 14-4, and that 10-goal differential triggers a running clock for the rest of the game under MIAA riles. Leominster scored twice in the final two minutes.

Nine Buccaneers were on the scoring sheet, with senior Allie Zorn totaling six and junior Gaby Zovko adding four. Other tallies were by Astrid Yerardi (three), Abby Morrissey (two) and Emma Dubrovsky, Finley Halloran, Sophie Morrissey, Bella Seldon, and Shannon Young, one each.

Charlotte Dreyfus, a sophomore, was solid in net for Bedford, fronted by a relentless defensive corps.
