Work on the long-awaited realignment of the intersection of North and Chelmsford Roads was scheduled to get underway on Wednesday.

“Most folks will just see work around the edges of the project,” said David Manugian, director of the Department of Public Works.

“Mobilization may include bringing in a trailer, equipment, and materials to set up for the project,” Manugian said, noting that construction is expected to conclude near the end of the summer of 2023.

The $3.5 million plan calls for changes in the layout, as well as a traffic signal, to increase visibility and safety and improve traffic flow. Also on the agenda are bike lanes and sidewalks along parts of North and Chelmsford Roads.

The contractor is J. Tropeano Inc. of North Andover. “A subcontractor will be setting up erosion controls starting this week,” Manugian reported.

“Some initial clearing and vegetation removal, including trees, may start this week,” the director said. “Their surveyor may also be starting to set stakes for the sidewalk, limit of work, and drainage improvements.”
