For the many children and caregivers who love the Children’s room at the Bedford Free Public Library, you may want to stop by in the next few days to say “farewell and thank you” to a familiar face.

Elaine Garnache, who has held the position of Children’s Librarian since 2017, plans to retire on Sept. 28.  During her time at the Library, Garnache and Bethany Klem, former Head of Children’s Services, ran a myriad of successful programs, notably the Summer Reading Program.

Library Director Richard Callaghan noted with appreciation that Garnache had actually planned to retire earlier than September but she graciously stayed on to manage the Summer Reading Program during the transition period after Klem left to become Director of the Dover Library.

The Citizen spoke briefly with Garnache about what she plans to do in retirement. She said, with a  chuckle, “I’m asking that myself!” Seriously, although she will miss Bedford –“ a wonderful place-and Murphy the turtle,” she said it’s easier to be leaving the Children’s Room knowing it’s in the good hands of Nicole Monk, new Head of Children’s Services. Monk came on board in late August.

After years of dealing with children’s literature, Garnache had some thoughts about what today’s kids are reading.  Yes, they still love the classics – “Goodnight, Moon,” “Winnie the Pooh,” “Treasure Island.” But she welcomes the diversity in books being written for children nowadays.
