I was age 42, living in Bedford, before I saw the logic of biking, and began fair weather commuting along Rt.62 to my job in West Concord. Today, 50 years later, I biked my measured 10 mile loop to the Market Basket in South Billerica, up Rt. 3A to O’Connor Hardware, back 3A to Lexington Rd. and home to Bedford. Though I think our streets are reasonably safe, I do prefer to ride the Minuteman bikeway, as my access to Cambridge and via the T into Boston. A plus is access at Alewife to a roofed, locked, place to shackle my bike.
The citizens of Lexington and Arlington, who opposed the building of that bikeway out of fear that it would open their property to incursions of undesirable people, have found those fears to be unfounded. I see our bikeway as a climate friendly transportation asset that I use and think it only fair that an extension be equally available to those in West Bedford who choose any human powered mode of travel.
The town voted against this. The only reason it is back for another vote is the Select Board didn’t like the vote. It’s undemocratic.
Voted down, but a significant majority voted for. And there is a decades long record of other votes in favor of the project. Regardless, this won’t be the first article to come to back in front of TM (accessory dwelling units and the playing fields come to mind)
You can still use path as discussed. Hundreds of bikers ride through the branch every day and enjoy natures natural beauty. I saw a beautiful owl in a tree this morning on my bike as I made my way to downtown Concord for breakfast
I agree with your support of the bike paths, Brown.
