Town Moving Ahead with Purchase of 23 Winterberry Way

September 29, 2022

At a noon meeting on Wednesday, the Municipal Affordable Housing Trust voted unanimously to “affirm the determination of uniqueness” for the purchase of 23 Winterberry Way. Passing this vote triggers the next step that makes it possible for Town Manager Sarah Stanton to move forward with a purchase and sale agreement for the property. The property must be advertised in the Massachusetts Central Registry for 30 days.

Acquisition of the three bedroom, standalone unit will keep the home within the town’s inventory of affordable housing. For background see: https://thebedfordcitizen.org/2022/09/housing-trust-moves-quickly-to-acquire-23- winterberry-way/

The Trust further voted to authorize the Town Manager to sign a purchase and sale agreement on its behalf.

Members of the Trust expressed an interest in a site visit to the home. No date has been set for a walk-through but it will be posted on the Trust website with due notice since such a visit constitutes a public meeting.

Liz Rust, Regional Housing Services Office, mentioned that Habitat for Humanity has expressed an interest in partnering with the town on renovating the property. The procedure would be for the town to convey the property to Habitat which would then perform the necessary work under their program of sweat equity, and select a tenant. Habitat is one scenario but there could be other possibilities after 23 Winterberry is acquired by the Town. Future Trust meetings will focus on details going forward, once a purchase and sale agreement has been signed.
