Did You Know: Resources for those of us getting older (Or for our parents!)

December 5, 2022

We’re starting a new series called “Did You Know?” The idea is to highlight some of the numerous resources available here in town.  Many of them are free.

First up: Resources for those of us getting older (Or for our parents!)

One good thing about getting older is there are A LOT of resources available to help. From assistive technology, to help with signing up for Medicare, to transportation, personal care – the list is long and impressive. In fact, it’s so extensive, one of the first things many people need help with is understanding what’s available.

Did you know the COA (Council on Aging) has a social worker to help? Danika Castle has been with the COA since February 2019. Here is what she says: “I’m available to all Bedford seniors, their families, and caregivers to assist them in meeting their needs by connecting them to available resources and services. I am available to speak with anyone by phone or in person and can offer home visits as needed/preferred. I can help assess the situation and provide guidance, information, and resources to best suit their needs.  The list of topics I help with is quite lengthy. Some of the most frequent requests are related to finances, food insecurities, housing, home care, caregiver support, and falls prevention.”

There’s a lot of help out there. You can start by talking with Danika at the COA, either by emailing [email protected] or calling the COA at 781-275-6825.

Remember, you don’t know what you don’t know, so please reach out anytime with any questions or concerns.

Do you have other resources we should highlight? Let us know.

Thanks for this article. My Bedford siblings and I find ourselves having mysteriously arrived into the “Senior” category, and it is encouraging to know who to reach out to for help with the inevitable life changes.
