Members of the Bedford Troop 194 family traveled to Jaffrey, NH on Jan. 13-15. Our adventure took us to Scout Camp Wanocksett which is located next to Thorndike Pond near Mount Monadnock. It turned out to be a great weekend to be out and about.

Most settled into two cozy cabins. One brave Scout, Ryan J, put up a tent. During the night, Ryan thought it was raining. It was SNOWING!

On Saturday, the temperature was in the 30s. To start, Mr. Mike and Devon P cut numerous holes in the ice using a power auger to see how thick it was and if it was safe. It was about six inches thick (Safe). A week before our adventure, it was only a little over three inches thick (Not Safe). Scoutmaster John M cooked up some tasty breakfast sandwiches for the adults.

As part of our adventure, members of Troop 194 and some of their guests built and launched model rockets. Mr. Mark S headed up this part of the weekend’s activities. Saturday was a nice day for rocket launching. Rockets were launched from the frozen lake. The lake provided us with a large area for the search and recovery phases of the launches. This is the very first-time launching rockets that we have had NO misfires.

Besides the rocket launching, some ice fishing took place. Mike P seemed to be the only one who knew what he was doing. Several visitors arrived after lunch. Nicky, who is a trapper employed by the state, arrived with his boss Tricia and several mink, beaver, and fox pelts. He explained how he processed the pelts. That was interesting. Allan C’s dog Gunner was not impressed. Other visitors were Dave, DJ, McKenzie, and Marie K.

Saturday culminated with a nice hot tasty meal for all. Foil dinners that contained meat potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, onions, and a tomato for moisture were cooked over the coals by all. After dinner, a few board games were played. Then it was time for Alex M to create an experimental dessert. His dessert was a success. It was awesome.

On Sunday, it was time to get up, eat breakfast, pack, and head for home. In addition to those mentioned above, the following attended and had a wonderful time.

Scouts: Theo M. Kaan, Luke N., Adam S., Michael F., Bennett T., John M., Rich Z., Elliot S. Adults Mr. David J., Mr. Greg M, Mr. David T., Mr. Kyle S. and trip leader Mr. Ken S.
