The free Lyceum series continues from 1 to 2:30 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 29 at First Parish on the Common with Bedford resident Vlad Shapiro, a Ukrainian-American from Kyiv, who will present “Ukraine 101: Root causes of the Russian invasion in context-Ukraine’s history, culture, and people.”
There will be a follow-up lecture at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5 in this two-part presentation. Both events will take place in person at the church or via Zoom. No registration is required and the Zoom links are given below. There will be time for questions from the audience.
Shapiro, whose family moved to Bedford in 2016, came to the U.S. in 1991 as a math graduate student at Brandeis University. In the past 20 years he has been working as an advisor in the cybersecurity field, concentrating on the human factor element.
He will provide background on cultural and historical differences between the Ukraine and Russian populations, Ukraine’s place in the global economy, as well as key information about Ukrainian culture and traditions.
Shapiro is an author and guest speaker at conferences in his area of expertise, working with clients around the world. His interests include sports (soccer and basketball specifically), world and Eastern European history and culture, chess, and music.
