Defense, Free Throws Propel Bedford Boys to 11th Win

February 1, 2023

Eric Miles nailed a three-point basket with 4:44 remaining in the third quarter to propel the Bedford High School Buccaneers to a 32-18 lead over Lincoln-Sudbury.

Six minutes, 48 seconds later, Jamie Buchannan’s putback broke a drought that would have been scoreless but for one foul shot. Yet the Bucs still led by 11, and went on to defeat the Warriors, 53-38, in a raucous BHS gymnasium.

“We fought through some adversity, but we came out with the victory,” said Head Coach Anthony Halls, who noted that with an 11-4 record, the Buccaneers “are going to get every team’s best game.”

The next test comes Friday at 7 p.m. at Concord-Carlisle.

Foul shooting and defense were the difference Tuesday. Lincoln-Sudbury converted just 36 percent of its attempts from the floor, and the Warriors were dismal from the line, making just five of 17. Bedford hit 17 of 40 shots, and drained 16 of 26 free throws.

Halls acknowledged that turnovers were a problem, especially in the first quarter when each team had eight.

The Bucs expanded their six-point halftime lead to 11 after three quarters, and the Warriors never got closer than seven before fading at the end.

Camdyn Shoesmith, Bedford’s junior power forward, was a statistical marvel against L-S, with 14 rebounds, five steals, four assists, and two blocks. Oh, and he led all scorers with 14, including eight of 12 from the line.

Halls said different players step up each game, and Tuesday seniors Eric Miles and Ryan Cohen, celebrating senior night, combined for 18 points.
